every once in a while I find myself in the need to read the part in "Second Helpings" when Jess tells Paul and PACO off during her rant.

"PACO is all about accepting people of different races, religions, and lifestyles, which is good. But when it comes down to it, you're a bunch like-minded people who want to talk to other like-minded people... You don't want anything to do with anyone who doesn't share your politically correct point of view. You filter out any opposing thoughts that might undermine your cause, whatever it is... I mean you don't even know what you're protesting today, so you're protesting everything!"

An icicle dripped from the tip of my nose in the subzero silence.

"To single out any injustice for the purposes of our protest would be insulting to all those who suffer in the world" responded a flabbergasted Paul. "How can we measure one's oppression versus another's?"

"But you're not really taking a stand against anything!"

"You are wrong," Paul said, finally regaining his calm.

"See? That's exactly what I'm talking about. I'm entitled to my opinion."

"Not if your opinion is wrong," he said.

"It's my opinion," I huffed/ "By definition it can't be wrong."

"Well, it is," he said.

It gives me a sense of calm sometimes to read this. I can't explain the exact mood I have to be in in order to want to read it, but now is one of those times.

Anywho, enough angsty thoughts for tonight.

She and Obama shared like 90% of the same opinions, so when it got right down to it, I didn't actually care which one won, because either way I was down with both of their politics. I just thought she would have a better chance of winning than him, but whatevs. It's pretty irrelevant now.

Gloria Steinem, the grand-poo-ba of the feminazis was quite hopeful on September 4th that she would have no effect becuase women were too smart to fall for the republican's plan to get all those women who were going to vote for clinton. Obviously because she is the exact opposite of clinton and will only work to limit the rights of women, instead of ensure that they are upheld.

Rebecca Traister talks about how this is a new type of feminism where women just support anyone with ovaries (hello ann coulter!), but as she points out... "In this strange new pro-woman tableau, feminism -- a word that is being used all over the country with regard to Palin's potential power -- means voting for someone who would limit reproductive control, access to healthcare and funding for places like Covenant House Alaska, an organization that helps unwed teen mothers. She violates my two big no-nos. anti-choice and she fired a librarian because the woman wouldn't pull books from the library that she wanted censored.

call me anti-feminist if you want, but we are basically supporting the female version of mike huckabee. who I am pretty sure many people agreed with me when I called him insane for still believing in creationism. oh wait. Sarah Palin doesn't think he's an idiot. Though, after her interview with Charles Gibson, where she just reverted to stock quotes and had no idea what the Bush Doctrine was (though she very much believes in it, let me tell you), I can only stare in shock.

I mean, yeah, I don't expect the common american to know what it is, but someone running for vp? YEAH I THINK SO. It's only been the doctrine that has defined the past 7 years foreign policy. We have the right to pre-emptively strike if we feel threatened. She believes in it, but she doesn't know the words to define it. In school, we were all expected to know what the Monroe Doctrine (stay out of this hemisphere, all you other countries!) and the Roosevelt Corrollary to the Monroe Doctrine (and if there is upheaval in this hemisphere, only the US can interevene- are you listening Latin America?!), but god-forbid any of us learn the more relevant Doctrine that has allowed us to make a mess of the middle east. WHATEVER. Just go ignore your children some more, and watch them get knocked up...

I mean, as Bill O'Reilly put it (though in regards to the Spears family, but I think it applies here...)

I had so much faith in her, and I stood by her as the campaign fell to bits, but the fact that the only speech she has made was before the announcement of Palin, at the DNC, and she has not come out to say "My policies are here, Sarah Palin's policies belong in North Korea" is totally wrong and has made me become really disappointed in her.

On a lighter note, take into account the beauty and brilliant opinion of Matt Damon...

so for the past three weeks or so I have been feeling totally out of whack. I have been mostly in a wicked slump with a few exceptions here and there (though my birthday wasn't even that great because it brought about some unpleasant realizations). I have been feeling really anxious and I thought it was just my last burst of teen angst, but turning 20 only made me more stressed. I have to figure out a career in my 20s! the average age for giving birth for the first time? 25. that would also imply marriage. all of this and the following reasons come together to make me a basket case when left to my own devices

1. I have not seen certain people enough this year and I am really not ok with it. There are reasons aplenty for why visits never happened, but it's annoying to hear some people claim they feel no need to visit you. ever. Growing apart from friends is really something that upsets me a great deal.

2. a certain friend is really not doing better, no matter what I tell others or try to tell myself. and I don't know what to do about it.

3. I am totally stressed about the end of school. I am supposed to be studying for finals NOW?!?!?

4. The end of this school year means summer. I am all sorts of worried about this summer. Half of my girlfriends aren't coming back and other people I hang out with are not pleased about coming back, thus bitterness ensues.

5. I don't remember what it feels like to stand for 11 hours at a time.

6. Fall Semester I am going to London, which means I am going when everyone else will be on campus. So the majority of my friends will be gone. fantastic. Sure, there are a couple times that I will see them in the coming months, but it's sad to realize that some of the connections I have made this year will only become weaker in a few months because of distance.

7. I tell people I am seriously considering becoming a Law Librarian, but I really have no clue what I want to do with my life. and I am supposed to decide in a 18 short months?!?! This line of thinking usually ends with me having to take deep breaths into a brown paper bag...

8. I feel as if I have made no impact this year on anything. This is the first time in about 5 years I have not volunteered a significant part of my week. This occurred to me the other day, and I was deeply disturbed. I feel as if I am rootless because I have nothing to point to show that I am contributing to the world in some sort of way. When I think about what I could volunteer for, I get overwhelmed with thinking about the problems in the world and my total ignorance about most of them. How am I supposed to choose one to volunteer for?!?

9. I realize in the grand scheme of things, my problems are incredibly small, but they seem to be all exploding inside of me and I know this isn't the best forum to air my problems, but I don't know a better way to do it...

My Mostly Annual Oscar Predictions

So the Oscar's are ON. yippee! I can hardly wait for the pretty dresses and sparkly jewelry. In celebration of this event and the end of the writer's strike, here is my list of predictions of who will win in the categories I randomly choose. Let me know what you think about my thoughts!

Best picture
“Atonement,” “Juno,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men,” “There Will Be Blood.”

Me thinks this one is going to go to “There Will Be Blood.” There is a good possibility of “No Country for Old Men" winning, but I don't think so (see best directors). In fact, I think the big upset could be if the depressing, bloody vote is split and "Juno" runs away with the prize.

Best actress
Cate Blanchett, “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”; Julie Christie, “Away From Her”; Marion Cotillard, “La Vie en Rose”; Laura Linney, “The Savages”; Ellen Page, “Juno.”

From everything I have been reading this is Julie Christie's race to lose. I really wish that Marion Cotillard had a chance because she was fricken amazing and if she was a guy this would be her race to lose (see Joaquin Phoenix and Jamie Fox). An unheard of upset would be Ellen Page winning. Cate Blanchett has no chance.

Best actor
George Clooney, “Michael Clayton”; Daniel Day-Lewis, “There Will Be Blood”; Johnny Depp, “Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”; Tommy Lee Jones, “In the Valley of Elah”; Viggo Mortensen, “Eastern Promises.”

Again, this is another race that everyone says it should already have the statue engraved. Daniel Day-Lewis is supposedly the best thing since sliced bread's invention in this movie. I don't even know who could possibly provide some sort of upset in this.

Best supporting actress
Cate Blanchett, “I’m Not There”; Ruby Dee, “American Gangster”; Saoirse Ronan, “Atonement”; Amy Ryan, “Gone Baby Gone”; Tilda Swinton, “Michael Clayton.”

This, I think is the haziest category. The front runner for a long time was Amy Ryan. I would fully support that win (especially those who have seen her in the Wire are big fans of her performance). I don't think they will give it to Saoirse or Tilda. Cate Blanchett is supposedly grand as Bob Dylan and Ruby Dee might win by pulling on the heartstrings of the voters (she's like 80. but Entertainment Weekly pointed out that she was on screen less than Judi Dench in "Shakespeare in Love" and there was an outcry after her win because she was on screen for so little time). Therefore, my vote goes to Amy Ryan.

Best supporting actor
Casey Affleck, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”; Javier Bardem, “No Country for Old Men”; Hal Holbrook, “Into the Wild”; Philip Seymour Hoffman, “Charlie Wilson’s War”; Tom Wilkinson, “Michael Clayton.”

I really like Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance- he was the best part of that movie. Tom Wilkinson was also the best part of "Michael Clayton", in my opinion. However, I don't think either of them have a chance. Hal Holbrook is super old, so he might get an upset win because of sentimental reasons (60 years in the biz; no wins). Casey AffleckJavier Bardem. Most things I have read, said there is no reason why Bardem shouldn't win. I think Casey will have chances in the future to match his brother's golden statue.

This is the category in which Joel and Ethan Coen will get awarded for their efforts on this movie. They are the most experienced in the business and are beloved by the academy.

I think this is going to go to the Coens again. The only upset would be if Harwood won because that movie was critically acclaimed with very little rewards. (I do think it would be interesting if "Atonement" won. I thought that was very well done, but I didn't read the book so I don't know how it totally compares).

the nominees were just announced and I can't help but realize I have only seen MAYBE 8 (oh yes, I am including you Bourne Ultimatum, Enchanted, and Once (wait, you say, where were these nominated?!?! check out the editing/songs sections) of these films nominated in any category. Is this a reflection more on me or on the films being made?I'm pretty sure "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will be Blood" were not targeted at teenage girls. Others I have just never heard about (In the Valley of Elah? Eastern Promises? Away from Her? Môme, La? Scaphandre et le papillon, Le?)

5. Check your email.

6. Call up a friend and ask if he/she wants to go to grab a coffee. Just to get settled down and ready to work.

7. When you get back to your room, sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lit place.

I hate to admit it, but I kind of love Britney Spears' new album "Blackout". As most of you know I follow Perez Hilton like it's my religion, so I was ready for this album to suck. Unfortunately, it's like the gossip girl of music for me at the moment. "Piece of Me" might be my favorite, but it's kind of sad to listen to because she didn't write these songs, so this is how people perceive her life, right? I don't think this actually how she feels, based on her actions towards the court. She's a mess. And I can't stop listening.
